Helo, Kybella! Bye bye, Double Chin!
If you’re anything like me, you’ve noticed that pesky double chin sneak up a time or two in certain photos. And, if you’re anything like me, you may or may not have reached google for: “Best angles to take a photo without a double chin.”
Let’s be honest, the head tilt can only do so much. And hell if I’m going to always sit like that in real life.
That’s where Kybella can step in.
Ok, first, what IS Kybella?
Here’s Katie the PA-C talking: Kybella is deoxycholic acid. It is the only FDA approved injectable medication to reduce submental fat.
Here’s the Katie-in-real-life version: Kybella permanently decreases the amount unwanted fat of the double chin area.
How does it work?
By disrupting the cell membrane of the fat cell, Kybella destroys fat cells in the area that it is injected. After the fat cells are destroyed, the body is able to reabsorb the remaining components and you’re left with a slimmer profile.
What is the treatment like?
At True to You, we schedule Kybella appointments for an hour. However, the treatment does not take that long. The first part of your appointment will be discussing the treatment and your goals, taking photos and signing consents. We will also go over all post-care instructions at length.
Once we’re ready to get started, your provider will apply a template on your skin. (It’s essentially a temporary tattoo.) You’ll be offered an ice pack to ice the area to be treated to reduce discomfort.
After about 5-10 minutes of icing, the treatment will begin. We use very small needles to methodically inject the Kybella in your double chin area. Expect a little pinch and full feeling with the treatment.
Immediately after, the area will feel full and likely start to swell. You can keep the ice on it if it feels good to you.
What will I look like after the treatment?
Expect swelling. You’ll probably be pretty swollen for the first week. After that, the swelling does subside.
I typically recommend to plan Kybella at least 4 weeks prior to any big event like a wedding or family photos.
In my personal experience, I was swollen for about 3 days. But after that, acquaintances and strangers probably thought I was just a little heavy in the face. By 14 days, the swelling had subsided.
Who is the ideal candidate?
There are a lot of people who would benefit from Kybella. However, the ideal candidate is someone who still has great elasticity of the skin and a small-ish pocket of genetic fat in the double chin area.
Is it really permanent?
Short answer: Yes.*
*with a caveat. Yes, the fat cells that are destroyed are destroyed forever. However, the fat cells that remain can still shrink and swell with weight loss and gain. But overall, you’ll have less fat cells to actually swell in times of a little overeating.
How many treatments does it take?
It’s very individualized. However, you’ll typically need between 2-6 treatments. The amount of treatments and vials depends on the amount of fat in the area and how your body reacts to the medication.
I’ve heard about CoolSculpting. What’s the difference?
CoolSculping is another option in the double chin area. With cryolipolysis technology, fat cells are frozen and destroyed. Different technology, essentially, same end goal.
Here’s the difference, though. The CoolSculpting applicator comes in one size - kind of a “one-size-fits-all” idea. Plus, if you have more fat in that area, you may need to do 2 “cycles” of CoolSculpting to encompass the entire area. Also, CoolSculpting suggests more than one treatment for optimal results.
Kybella, on the other hand, is very tailorable to your exact anatomy. We can use that to our advantage and truly target your most worrisome areas.
Non-surgical options abound these days. It’s hard to know what’s the best option for you. We would love to see you in our office for a complimentary consultation to discuss your needs and goals.
